Tips from Kip:
1) What noticeable savings or benefits have you seen since your certification?
As a LEED New Construction Certified building, we have been operating in a sustainable manner from the time the building was developed. This has enabled us to realize savings and operational benefits from inception. With the LEED Existing Buildings Platinum Certification, we have continued that operational excellence and achieved even greater savings and benefits in our energy consumption, water consumption, and tenant engagement.
2) What were some of the challenges or hurdles in completing your certification?
Our biggest challenge was collecting the documentation required for our submittal and aligning our key suppliers to achieve our goals for certification. Collaboration was critical to the success of our platinum certification and required a clear course of action right from the start.
3) What suggestions would you give to those considering certification?
I highly recommend engaging a consultant to help guide you through the process and to be your advocate with the USGBC. We also benefited greatly by having a highly engaged engineering team that understood our objectives for LEED and helped execute on our plan.
4) Any other comments?
I encourage those managing properties to consider pursuing LEED certification at any level. It is an excellent opportunity to recognize the property and management team for operational excellence, develops a critical path for sustainable practices, and ultimately adds value to the property.
