Green Buildings Committee

Our Green Buildings committee focuses on sustainability and green buildings to promote energy efficiency and environmental responsibility by creating an atmosphere of awareness and education. Our goal is to provide leadership to BOMA members that will help decrease the negative environmental impact associated with building operations and management. As well as provide workshops and seminars on the latest technologies, codes, and regulations to promote green facilities.

Earth Day Every Day-What Are Your Plans?

As we prepare to celebrate the 47th annual Earth Day(April 22), we are reminded through acknowledgements around the globe that our planet is vulnerable and that our actions upon it are increasingly important.

Our Green Buildings Committee works to remind our membership that our CRE buildings are responsible for an enormous amount of global energy use, resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

As the demand for more sustainable building options increases, green construction is becoming increasingly profitable and desirable within the international construction market. In the United States alone, buildings account for almost 40 percent of national CO2 emissions and out-consume both the industrial and transportation sectors, it’s clear that this industry ought to be on the forefront of change (benefits of green building).

BOMA has long been committed to helping its members and the industry as a whole improve energy management and sustainability practices. These efforts make sense for the planet AND for our budgets.

Earth Week (April 17-21) creates an opportunity for our CRE industry to emphasize this notion of human stewardship.

From companies large and small, we’d like to know what companies, employees and partners are doing internally to commemorate the day.
Please let us know what you have planned! Send me an email and we’ll post to our website as well as promote through our social media outlets.

Be sure to visit for information and resources on green and sustainable building operations and practices.

Real estate management teams, in conjunction with building occupants, can have a positive impact on the environment through a strong commitment to implement current government programs; manage hazardous waste and environmental risks; establish recycling, water and energy conservation plans; ensure healthy indoor air quality; implement “green” purchasing practices; and encourage public transportation and carpooling programs. Building owners and managers have a social responsibility to utilize “green” technologies where proven to increase building efficiency and that provide a positive return on investment (ROI).

BOMA International supports the development and promulgation of national model energy efficiency building codes - the International Code Council’s (ICC) International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings – that meet the needs of city, state and federal code adopting authorities as well as the commercial real estate industry by the inclusion of only those provisions that are technically feasible, cost-effective, and enforceable to establish minimum efficiency requirements that apply to all newly constructed buildings, and to tenant finish-out, additions and major renovations to existing buildings.
