Disney Goes Solar with Mouse-Shaped Installation

The mouse’s house is going solar.

The Walt Disney World Resort recently installed a mouse-shaped solar power facility. The resort's 270-acre, 50-megawatt operation is expected generate enough solar power to operate two of its four Orlando theme parks, according to Chip and Co. Full article available online at

Arizona hotels and restaurants capitalize on eco-friendly tourism boom

Arizona’s lodging and tourism industry is looking a lot greener (and cleaner). And because of that, more Arizona hotels and restaurants are capitalizing on the eco-friendly tourism boom.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and the Arizona Hotel & Lodging Association (AzLTA) recently launched a comprehensive update to the Certified Green Lodging Program. Together, with the help of Arizona State University sustainability interns, ADEQ and AzLTA gathered data to expand even more green initiatives in the areas of conservation, waste reduction and overall improvement in sustainability. From application to verification and certification, the process to become a Certified Green Lodging facility typically takes a mere 30 days to complete. And the benefits? USGBC Launches LEED Zero Certification

Net-zero energy is no longer just for boutique buildings. Net-zero energy – producing at least as much energy with renewable sources as a building uses from the grid – is increasingly within reach for a range of building types and sizes.

The number of net-zero energy buildings is growing rapidly, up 700 percent since 2012, according to the New Buildings Institute’s Getting To Zero Status Update. California has even mandated that all new commercial buildings must be net-zero energy by 2030.  Full article available at

U.S. City Earns LEED Certification

Many commercial and institutional facilities strive to become more sustainable, but individual buildings are just small parts of a much larger picture — namely, entire communities.

Lancaster, Penn., has earned gold certification under the new LEED for Cities program, which recognizes leadership in sustainability. It is among the first communities in the United States and the world to earn the rating, which also recognized Washington, D.C.; Phoenix; Arlington County, Va.; Songdo, South Korea; Savona, Italy; and Surat, India. Final reminder: Document current scores and data before 8/26
In less than a week, performance metrics for all building types will be updated in Portfolio Manager, including 1-100 ENERGY STAR scores and other source energy metrics.

These new metrics will be applied across all time periods, which means your scores and metrics for all historical benchmarking data will change. Once this happens, EPA will not be able to provide “before and after” score changes for individual buildings or portfolios. Full article available online at

How Do You Select Green Products?

At the recent Greenbuild conference, several exhibitors touted both their products’ Red List compliance (meaning, basically, their products don’t have any really bad chemicals in them) and also the availability of Environmental Product Declarations and Health Product Declarations for their products. My, how times have changed.

About 12 years ago, the editors of Building Operating Management magazine endeavored to put together a “Green Products Directory” — a document listing how products contributed to individual LEED credits, because at the time, we thought a product contributing to the LEED was the best criterion for defining it as green. Curtailing Facility Water Usage Can Aid Sustainability Efforts

Institutional and commercial facilities take many different paths to sustainability. Some opt for a narrow focus that delivers quick results in one specific area, while others broaden the scope a bit by identifying several related targets, then setting goals and delivering benefits in those areas.

Then there is Florida Blue. The Jacksonville-based health insurance provider — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida — put its corporate social responsibility pledge into practice five years ago by setting ambitious goals to reduce water and energy use and increase recycling. The results? “We have reduced our electricity usage by 15 percent, reduced our water usage by 21 percent, and diverted 80 percent of our waste to recycling plants,” says Russell Peacock, Florida Blue’s senior director of facility operations. Maracay Homes took big step forward in green homebuilding in 2017

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Local homebuilder, Maracay Homes continued to expand its commitment to sustainability and environmental design in 2017 with the design and development of nearly 300 Phoenix-area homes that either are or will be registered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) with the goal of earning LEED® certification.

The demand for green homes has continued to grow year after year. In fact, 91 percent of buyers in the 2013 National Association of Homebuyers (NAHB) study, “What Home Buyers Really Want,” listed Energy Star® -rated homes as their most-desired feature. However, in 2016, only 10 percent of new homes built were Energy Star® rated, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). And, in 2014, just 1 percent of single-family homes were certified with LEED®, the industry standard for green development. Full article available online at

House Proposal Would Shift Energy Star to DOE

Responsibility for the Energy Star program would shift from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the U.S. Department of Energy under a proposed bill, which would also make significant changes in the process of setting Energy Star specifications.

The measure — called “The Energy Star Reform Act of 2017” — has not been formally introduced into the House. But a so-called discussion draft was reviewed by a House of Representatives Energy and Commerce subcommittee. Full article available online at

Going Green Fannie Maes Multifamily Green Initiative

Fannie Mae (FNMA) is the nation’s largest source of multifamily mortgage capital. During the last quarter of 2011 research indicated that more than 13,000 FNMA loans, equating to $75 billion, would mature between 2012 and 2016. Realizing these maturities were coming, along with its position to influence the market, FNMA took steps to incorporate goals and programs to advance what is known as the “Multifamily Green Initiative” (MGI). The following are FNMA’s goals with respect to the initiative:
• Serve as a catalyst to accelerate multifamily property improvements based on green principles;
• Address the financial and housing industries’ need for energy and water performance data for multifamily properties; and
• Raise awareness and advance public discourse on energy efficiency.

Sustainability from Building To Community: On Regenerative Design

Imagine if your building or project inspired better sustainability throughout its community. And as a result, the community looks to and supports your building as a catalyst for sustainable growth. Imagine if your building contributes to the health and well-being of not just its own inhabitants but the inhabitants of the surrounding neighborhood and community and perhaps the whole city and ecosystem in which it is situated. What if all buildings contributed to the sustainability, health, well-being, and prosperity of their communities, and that building and community continued to evolve together? This is a concept called regenerative development, which to some may seem far-fetched. But it’s happening every day.

The idea of sustainable buildings has become so commonplace that energy and resource efficiency have become expected attributes. But what do we mean by sustainable buildings? Taking a traditional point of view, we could say that sustainable buildings make it possible for future generations to enjoy the same quality of life that we currently have. In other words, sustainable buildings don’t use up resources and may even generate more (energy, fresh water) than they need. But are we accomplishing that with “sustainable,” LEED, and other green certified projects today? That question hardly needs answering because we can all see for ourselves; there is still much work to be done when we become present to the effects of climate change, pollution, and overconsumption of natural resources and the fact that we continue to de-generate our ecosystems rather than regenerating them. 10 Steps To Advanced Water Efficiency

Many facility managers have tapped low flow toilets and urinals and aerated faucets and showers to conserve water in their buildings. Compared to standard fixtures, installing WaterSense-labeled toilets/urinals and faucets can save 20 percent of restroom/domestic water, according to Environmental Protection Agency data. But facility managers who have taken steps like these may not have noticed a drop in their water utility bills. The reason? Utility water rates across the country are rising faster than inflation. The problem is that water utilities have aging infrastructure that needs upgrading and raising the price is one way to fund these necessary improvements.

In Chicago, for instance, the cost per unit of water rose 25 percent in 2012 and 15 percent in years 2013 through 2015, before leveling off under a new rate structure tied to the Consumer Price Index, plus a maximum of 5 percent. In New York City, water cost $1.65 per unit (748 gallons) in 2006; in 2016 that rate was $3.81. Full article available online at

3 Steps To Net Zero Energy Operations

Operating a net zero energy building essentially means that the building produces as much energy as it uses on an annual basis. The obvious challenge with net zero energy is that you have to produce enough energy to achieve net zero, and solar panels, fuel cells, wind turbines, etc., require significant capital to procure.

The rotten truth about a net zero energy goal is that you can buy your way to it. Simply find a big bag of money and use it to buy solar panels to cover every square inch of your building. Lighting Focused on Occupant Health and Well-Being

Lighting for the built environment typically has been designed, specified, and manufactured to meet a relatively limited number of very specific objectives. Historically, the primary requirement of lighting has been that it should illuminate spaces to optimize visual performance (addressing concerns such as efficiency, productivity, and safety), provide visual comfort to occupants, and enhance the space’s appearance for aesthetic appreciation. Over time, increasing energy demand and costs led to the adoption of energy conservation as an additional requirement.

A newly burgeoning lighting industry initiative is human-centric lighting, also referred to as circadian-effective lighting. Based upon relatively recent developments in biophysical and lighting research, this approach focuses on how light’s non-visual characteristics can affect human health and well-being. By taking these characteristics and effects into account and recognizing their value, human-centric lighting promises to improve alertness, cognitive performance, sleep, and health while also benefitting a person’s mood, energy levels, relaxation, and even impulse control. Evidence shows that at least some of these goals can be achieved by lighting that works in harmony with our circadian rhythms, which are primarily synchronized to the environment by patterns of light and dark reaching the back of our eyes. 4 Ways To Go Green In Existing Buildings

The average commercial building wastes 30 percent of the energy it consumes, says Energy Star. While many new buildings are constructed with energy-saving features, they are a tiny fraction of the overall population of buildings. “If you’re going to have an impact (on energy consumption), you have to work with existing buildings,” says Bob Best, head of energy and sustainability services with JLL.

To be sure, a growing number of facility managers are doing just that. CBRE and Maastricht University publish an annual review of the growth in green building certifications in the 30 largest U.S. markets, says David Pogue, global director of corporate responsibility. In 2005, approximately 5 percent of this square footage carried these designations, while in 2016, nearly 40 percent of the space did, Pogue says. And this doesn’t include facilities that pursue energy efficiency initiatives, yet don’t become certified.  Full article available online at

WELL Building Standard Provides Blueprint for Healthy Building, Occupants

Building owners and facility managers are harnessing and implementing technology to create high-performance buildings, HVAC, lighting, interiors, and exteriors. But just as important as the building are the people in the workspaces. The physical workplace is one of the top three factors affecting performance and job satisfaction. In terms of an organization’s bottom line, personnel costs significantly outweigh the costs for design, construction, maintenance, and operations. Improving the workplace environment can reduce the largest line item in the 30-year costs of a building — personnel costs — offering a meaningful return on investment.

A healthy building can benefit both productivity and ROI. Ilona Bray, author of Healthy Employees, Healthy Business, recently found that a healthy building at Johnson & Johnson resulted in both a 15 percent increase in employee retention and a savings of $250 million in health care costs over a decade. Bray also noted that healthy workers are 3.1 times more productive than others. In an article in Harvard Business Review, Leonard Berry, Ann Mirabito, and William Baun found that a return of $6 can be expected for every $1 spent on a wellness program and that spending less than $40 per person per year on doubling ventilation rates could lead to an estimated productivity gain of $6,500 per person per year. REI’s Goodyear distribution center gets LEED Platinum certification

REI’s distribution center in Goodyear became the first distribution center to receive both the LEED Platinum certification and the Net Zero Energy rating after it received the LEED certification on Wednesday.

The 400,000-square-foot distribution center is the first center in 2016 to earn the Platinum Certification, and is the second largest Platinum-certified distribution or warehouse facility in the U.S. Full article available online at

Most states are combating climate change and growing their economies

Countries around the globe have committed to decoupling economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in an effort to curb the effects of global warming. States, too, have worked to cut emissions while growing their economies, but the degree to which they’ve succeeded in doing so varies greatly.

A new Brookings Institution report compares state’s recent economic growth to changes in carbon emissions. In all, 33 states and the District of Columbia achieved reductions in emissions while expanding their economies between 2000 and 2014. The others saw their emissions continue to rise. LEED pricing update effective December 1

In December, GBCI will launch a new pricing schedule for LEED registration and certification across all active versions. The new pricing includes full access to the brand new arc platform, which was announced at this year’s Greenbuild Conference and Expo.

Arc is a green building performance platform that is fully integrated with LEED online and will allow any building, whether LEED certified or not, to immediately start measuring performance, making improvements and benchmarking against itself.  Full article available online at

Caliber announces 1st Net Zero Energy townhome complex in Tempe

Check Out Arizona's First Net Zero Energy Housing

The first Net Zero Energy housing in Arizona, MZ Townhomes, opened earlier this year, setting the standard for eco-friendly luxury living. MODUS Development’s Ed Gorman was able to bring this revolutionary project to Old Town Scottsdale by combining his knowledge of technology and design with his background in real estate development. Ed will be one of the speakers at our Phoenix State of the Market event Sept. 29.

MZ Townhomes is comprised of eight units, for sale starting at $449k, that offer a variety of innovative features, including rooftop-mounted solar panels, cool roof technology, solar orientation, a hybrid water heater that cuts down on water usage by over 60%, and a 14 SEER heat pump for heating and cooling. Another sustainable component is the energy recovery ventilator, which cycles fresh air inside while pushing contaminated air outside, reducing the load on the air conditioner. Scottsdale Water earns international accolades for exceptional performance

Officials back bill to encourage renewable energy on public lands

State and federal officials praised a bipartisan bill Wednesday that would encourage renewable energy development on public lands by streamlining the permitting process and letting local governments share in revenues from the projects.

The bill would “level the playing field” between renewable and fossil fuel projects on federal lands by creating a streamlined leasing process for wind and solar energy projects like the one in place for oil, gas and geothermal energy. Full article available online at

At USGBC, one important goal of our vision is promoting sustainable mobility around the world. We believe that parking and sustainability are not mutually exclusive concepts. We say that every story about a green building is a story about people, and every story about parking is a story about the connection between people and the planet. In the United States, there are between 105 million and 2 billion parking spaces for roughly 300 million vehicles, and these automobiles are parked for roughly 95 percent of their lifetimes, yet we rarely think about how parking spaces affect the environment.

How we operate our parking can significantly reduce our environmental impact, especially regarding carbon emissions, pollution and fuel consumption. Apple making plans to sell off extra solar energy from Arizona plant, others

How To Make A Better Case For Energy Upgrades With Utility Rebates

Advances In Getting Funding For Energy Efficiency Projects

Talk to facility managers and you’ll often hear about the difficulty of getting funding for new energy efficiency projects. Talk to experts in building energy efficiency, on the other hand, and you may hear that there is plenty of capital looking for projects to invest in. “We’re not lacking capital for energy efficiency; we’re just not connecting the dots,” says Matt Golden, of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).

Golden manages an EDF program intended to make it easier to get funding for energy efficiency projects. The Investor Confidence Project (ICP) seeks to standardize the process of performing building energy efficiency upgrades to make funding easier to obtain. Peoria ‘leads the pack’ in sustainability

Architectural Services Manager Ed Striffler told council at a study session May 17, Peoria was recently recognized nationally for efficient building design, and it “leads the pack in the state.”

Green housing project planned for Phoenix’s historic Roosevelt Neighborhood

There was an unusually high turnout at the Roosevelt Action Association meeting on Tuesday, with approximately 50 neighbors in attendance. The highlight of the evening was the presentation by Tim Sprague of Habitat Metro, LLC., developer of Portland on the Park and Portland Place. Sprague gave an overview of his new development project that will be located on 3rd Avenue and Roosevelt called R Cubed—rethink, reuse, recycle.

A six-story, 120-unit apartment project, ranging from 300 sf -1398 sf, with retail and commercial outlets on the ground floor and various environmental amenities. Water and wastewater costs have risen at a phenomenal rate over the last six years. According to a 2015 report by Circle of Blue, a group of scientists and journalists, rates nationally were up 41 percent since 2010. At the same time, the cost of electricity has stabilized, and in some areas actually decreased slightly. In the past, conventional chilled water/cooling tower air conditioning was the norm for large facilities. With all the new concern with Legionella, the concern over future water supplies in much of the nation, and the push for high-performance facilities, some are relooking at water use for air conditioning cooling systems. In response, the industry is changing and evolving to become both more energy- and water-efficient. For facility managers, understanding these trends, as well as the energy/water nexus of large commercial air conditioning systems, is critical to saving money and truly moving toward high-performance and sustainability.

Twenty years ago, the choices that large facilities had for air conditioning were simply air-cooled or water-cooled systems. With facilities of 200,000 square feet or more, the clear choice was either a two- or four-pipe system with a cooling tower. The chiller/cooling tower/chilled water system was the workhorse. It was mid-December when residents in the Fort Valley area started receiving letters from the Arizona Department of Water Resources. The letter referenced a general adjudication, a hydrographic survey report, water rights and a somewhat ominous statement, written in all capital letters, to “PLEASE READ THE ENCLOSED INFORMATION CAREFULLY.”

For three years, the spinning blades at Perrin Ranch Wind Energy Center have caught northern Arizona’s wind, turning it into power that gets shot across massive power lines onto the region’s electric grid.

Across much of the West and middle America, turbines like these are sprouting up in massive numbers. In a March report, the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimated that wind will account for 9.8 gigawatts of the more than 20 gigawatts of utility-scale generating capacity expected to be added to the power grid this year. State bill would stop cities from requiring energy use disclosures from building owners

In a report released by New York’s Department of Buildings (DOB), it was brought to attention that nine out of every 10 office or residential buildings fail to meet the New York City Energy Conservation Code. Federal funding to the tune of $123 million called for 90% of new buildings plans to comply by the code by 2017. As a result, Mayor de Blasio and the corresponding NYC officials have been cracking down on noncompliant properties. This compliance issue brings light to a bigger conversation on energy efficiency of commercial real estate buildings around the world, and what the future holds for both existing buildings and future developments.

The US is slowly making progress in the realm of energy efficiency in commercial real estate. New York State recently reported a savings of $4M in the first half of 2014 after implementing efficiency programs. Boston, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle rank among the most energy efficient cities in the country, with a wealth of others putting programs into place that will save millions of dollars over the next few years. There are also initiatives by private companies such as Honeywell, who is working with the Hillsborough, New Jersey school district on an energy efficiency program. The district expects to cut energy use and costs by almost 50%, and save over $1 million per year. Europe is also turning towards more sustainable options, spending on energy efficient buildings by countries within the European Union is expected to reach over $800M in the next decade. Energy efficiency programs that could be cut have helped thousands of consumers

Solar power might be the popular kid on the block in Arizona, but far more utility customers participate in energy-efficiency programs than put solar on their roofs, and far more will be affected if those programs are cut, as regulators propose.
Arizona Public Service Co., for example, has about 29,000 customers with rooftop solar, among the most of any U.S. utility.
But that pales in comparison with the hundreds of thousands of customers who have energy-efficient appliances, well-built homes and use low-watt light bulbs, all funded in part by the company’s efficiency program.  Full article available online at

Cairo's ultra-green mixed-use development will be topped with flowing solar canopy

Paris-based Vincent Callebaut Architecture has come up with a plan for a mixed-use complex located in Cairo that combines vegetation and structure to communicate Egypt's inclination toward progressive architecture, designboom reports. The proposal's main purpose is to raise awareness of sustainable architecture designed to combat global warming. 


The roof is solar, and shades green rooftop terraces and sky villas. This conserves energy otherwise needed for cooling, as do the solar panels and heating tubes on the roof.  The full article is available online at


$350M ‘green’ condominium project moves into Scottsdale

The Sterling Collection at Silverleaf, a “green” luxury condominium development, is set to launch sales in early November. The $350M development is one of the largest luxury residential projects in the Southwest.

Developed by Scottsdale-based Cypress Development Group, The Sterling Collection at Silverleaf will be the most luxurious condominium community to ever be developed and sold in Arizona as defined by its exclusive location, proposed LEED-certified building techniques, effortless ownership services, world-class amenities and distinctive finishes.  ASU’s Zero Waste by 2015 initiative is incomplete

ASU’s Zero Waste by 2015 initiative was launched on April 1 of this year, though it has been in the works for several years. One of many efforts centered around sustainability on campus, the Zero Waste program has been publicized fairly well and many of its programs have already been implemented. For instance, there are recycling bins on every corner; composting bins have been installed at Hassayampa and Barrett, the Honors College’s dining halls; cardboard collecting services have been implemented in Tempe and Polytechnic; hand dryers have been installed in most restrooms at all four campuses; and even more obscure efforts, such as athletic shoe collection, have been enacted in order to reduce solid waste diversion by 90 percent.

ASU’s effort to become a more sustainable institution should not be a surprise given the presence of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability and the School of Sustainability, one of the best sustainability programs in the world — and similar enterprises should be setting comparable goals. However, while reducing ASU’s waste is an extremely important and noble goal given its immense ecological footprint (17.72 million gross square feet), the Zero Waste by 2015 initiative is ultimately incomplete.  SkySong 3 Building Awarded LEED Silver Certification

SkySong3 The four-story, 145,000-square-foot office and research building at the intersection of SkySong Boulevard and Innovation Place has achieved Silver LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its sustainable design and construction.

LEED—Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design—is a certification program that sets the standard for environmentally responsible construction in the U.S. Buildings are measured based on the number of points they earn across the categories of green building, such as energy, water, indoor environment, location and materials.  Full article available online at


Net-Zero Energy townhomes coming to downtown Scottsdale

Sustainability’s strategic worth: McKinsey Global Survey results

Executives at all levels see an important business role for sustainability. But when it comes to mastering the reputation, execution, and accountability of their sustainability programs, many companies have far to go.
Company leaders are rallying behind sustainability, and executives overall believe the issue is increasingly important to their companies’ strategy. But as it continues to grow into a core business issue, challenges to capturing its full value lie ahead. These are among the key findings from our most recent McKinsey survey on the topic,1 which asked respondents about the actions their companies are taking to address environmental, social, or governance issues, the practices they use to manage sustainability, and the value at stake.

One such challenge is reputation management. Year over year, large shares of executives cite reputation as a top reason their companies address sustainability; of the 13 core activities we asked about, they say reputation has the most value potential for their industries. However, many of this year’s respondents say their companies are not pursuing the reputation-building activities that would maximize that financial value.  Full article available online at

The World's Greenest Office Building Opens in Munich

Munich, Germany now boasts the greenest office building in the world. NuOffice is off the charts in all sustainability metrics, easily achieving LEED platinum status. European research project DIRECTION and scientists from Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics banded together to help design the über-green building, hoping it will serve as a model for future new construction across the globe.
In order to raise the bar on the building’s energy efficiency, the science and research team sought to maximize the building’s passive energy use, driving down energy consumption and introducing renewable energy sources as main suppliers to the building. New Chinese City Goes Green For The Health Benefits

Where you live can have a big impact on your health. Bad air quality, a lack of green space, or too much soul-crushing traffic, and your physical and emotional health can take a nosedive. The terrible thing is, we’re so used to these problems, that we consider them normal, and completely ignore the way they make us feel.

A new project by Peter Ruge Architekten aims to find out if changing the very layout and construction of a city can alleviate those problems instead of making them worse. The firm is planning a city in China’s Hainan Province. It will be called ‘Green Health City‘ and could eventually serve as a sustainable urban prototype.  Full article available online at

Energy Star Portfolio Tool Upgrade Delayed

We are excited to let you know that the new Portfolio Manager tool is fully functional and all data and account records have been migrated over from the old tool. However, our first priority continues to be ensuring that the tens of millions of data points contained within Portfolio Manager's 70,000 active accounts have been migrated correctly and completely by the time of launch. LEED v4 Passes Ballot, Will Launch This Fall

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that its membership has voted to adopt LEED v4, the next update to the world’s premier green building rating system. The final overall vote was 86 percent in favor of adopting LEED v4. This includes 90 percent approval from the user category of the voting body, 77 percent approval from the general interest category and 89 percent approval from the producer category. The minimum overall percentage of votes needed for a passing vote was 66.7 percent.

“There are 46 countries and territories around the world and all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia represented in the voting pool for LEED v4, which includes an extraordinarily diverse group of industry professionals, manufacturers, educators and other green building leaders,” said Joel Ann Todd, chair of the LEED Steering Committee. “USGBC sets a very high bar for a rating system to be approved. The rating system must earn a significant percentage of the overall vote as well as a majority approval from each of the various LEED stakeholder groups. This ensures that rating system approval represents the full diversity of USGBC’s membership.”  Full article available online at

New Pilot Unlocks Deep Energy Efficiency in Buildings

For the first time, an electric utility is testing a 20-year model to purchase metered energy-efficiency savings. The agreement between Seattle City Light and the Bullitt Foundation is designed to make deep energy efficiency in new and existing commercial buildings economically feasible.

“This is a great partnership between the City and the private sector to encourage energy efficiency,” said Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn. “I hope this project can serve as a model for others to save money, reduce energy usage, and cut our carbon emissions.”  Full article available online at

Industrial Still Fights for Full Seat at LEED Table

The industrial sector, as a whole, with massive expanses of indoor space, has been the last property type to jump fully on to the sustainability bandwagon, in part because professional green certification processes haven’t caught up to the sector’s unique needs.

However, due to tenant and customer demand, more new construction and retrofit industrial projects are gaining professional green certification. According to the U.S. Green Building Council, 117 manufacturing properties have earned LEED certification, totaling 41 million sq. ft. This number should see strong growth, however, as 703 more projects have registered for certification, totaling 221 million sq. ft.  Full article available online at

How to Manage “Green Fatigue”

Businesses and consumers are inundated with “green,” whether watching TV or going to the car wash. It’s enough to force many to simply tune-out, ignoring calls for lower carbon footprints, recycling, and driving less.

So what does this mean for commercial building owners? Unfortunately, it means building occupants and visitors are often those very same green-fatigued consumers who are tuning out the benefits of their state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly and energy efficient surroundings. Grocers Reduce, Recycle and Re-Educate Customers on Green Buying

Grocers have gradually bought into green initiatives, launching sustainability programs that focus on conservation of water and energy, reduction of truck traffic and zero-waste technology.

Free LEED Certification For Groundbreaking Projects Abroad

With the aim of broadening the reach of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and accelerating the growth of sustainable development in new markets, the US Green Building Council will offer free LEED certification to the first projects to certify in 112 countries abroad.
